Araba Maya

Who is the bearer of this sad news?
Whose lips conveyed this news to my ears?
When did the fellow hear of it?
Why did he choose to tell the world?
For this fellow, who ever he may be has greatly totured my feeble heart.
Someone should hold me,
Someone should hold me,
Someone should hold me,
Three times i ask for help, for i’m losing it.

I dare not look into a mirror.
For i fear i might see the face of an older woman smiling.
I dare not look ahead also, for i fear to see the back of an older woman. Who occasionally turns to smile.
I dare not open the books for in each word and phrase i hear echoes of the sound of wisdom.

Barimah Kwesi Brew.
With her you grew.
1960 in Ghana, i sat under her amongst a few.
So go now i charge thee!
Go to the Fanteland and beg them not to sing a dirge.
Tell them Korkor said they should sing a love song and bid their sister farewell.
Barimah Kweis eehh.
You should have told us that if we count seven stones backwards it would hit your sister.
Hold the hand of your sister till we meet again.

And please hear me if you can,
Araba Maya is not dead.
No one should say that and mislead our young ones.
Araba Maya took a book to read.
And as she sat down quietly, she decided to join the words of the book.
So anytime you read she comes back to life to read with you.

Araba Maya your legacy lives on.
Because we won’t put our pens down.
